Live Urban Real Estate has grown to 50 agents in four years, but owners John Skrabec and Mark White haven’t recruited any of them.
“They have all contacted us,” said Skrabec, who had a 20-year career in marketing and advertising, before becoming involved in real estate, first as an agent, and then at Live (pronounced as in where you “live.”)
The boutique firm, which is gaining a national reputation for innovate and cutting edge marketing, wants agents, who like the firm itself, have a certain urban style and attitude.
Their efforts have not gone unnoticed.
Inman focuses spotlight on Live Urban
Last month, at the the annual Inman News Connect conference in San Francisco – a huge industry event – Live Urban was highlighted as a “Next Generation” Beta Brokerage firm. Pedal to Properties, in Boulder-based firm that specializes in touring homes with clients using bicycles, also was named as a Beta Brokerage firm. Live Urban and Pedal to Properties were the only two firms selected from the Mountain region.
At the Inman conference, Skrabec also spoke on a panel about how to build a brand online, with brokers from the Good Life Team in Austin, Texas, and MRealty of Portland, Oregon. Skrabec’s 10 commandments for brand-building include: Focusing on a specific market area; recreate bricks and mortar offices into a virtual online experien...

New Developments
New York University may enter the public approval process for its new Silver Towers site, the crown jewel of its wildly controversial 2031 expansion plan. The biggest hurdle for the school will be gaining approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commission, which will have final say on whether NYU can build on the landmark Bleecker Street site. The proposed building will be a "slender pinwheel tower," and is rumored to be planned for a 40-story structure.
New York University dropped in on Community Board 3's zoning committee meeting and had little to say about how its 6 million-square-foot expansion plan...

For an exciting summer vacation and endless days of surf, sand, and sun, nothing beats a vacation to the Currituck Outer Banks. Nestled in the northern strip of North Carolina, the Currituck County side of the shoreline provides an isolation from the more crowded areas of the Outer Banks, yet is not so far away that visitors are unable to see all the sights of coastal Carolina. The summer is definitely the peak season, but once the leaves begin to turn is no reason for people to think they can’t come in the fall of winter. Indeed, Currituck County is open all year around. There are many advantages to spending a fall or winter vacation in the Currituck Outer Banks. For one, the rates for lodging are much cheaper than they are in the summertime. A family interested in renting a beach house for the week may be surprised to learn how much less they can pay than if they reserved in July. Also, with the number of tourists significantly decreased, visitors have a larger pick of rentals to choose from. Just because the season is over, too, doesn’t mean all of the businesses in the area pack up and close until the Spring. Currituck County has fair share of permanent residents, so most businesses are open late in the year, ready to serve. Unlike northern parts of the country, the Currituck County area does maintain some warmth through the autumn. While there may be moments of chill like their neighbor to the north, Virginia, the temperature can stay as warm as the 70s th...

A juvenile Mississippi kite takes flight from a dead tree in Hideaway Hills. The bird was waiting for one of its parents to bring it food.
A mature Mississippi kite holds a grasshopper before offering it to its nearby juvenile.
For three years, birders have searched Hocking County trees for proof that a southern bird has made its home in Ohio.
This month, they discovered its nest in a white ash tree in Hideaway Hills.
The Mississippi kite has moved to Ohio.
"This is hugely important," said Jim McCormac of the Ohio Division of Wildlife. "They are charismatic and very cool, but more importantly, it represents a recovery of habitat."
The kite is about the size of a peregrine falcon, but lighter. It hunts insects on the fly, swooping in on cicadas and dragonflies at 70 mph.
McCormac, who has written a paper on the kite with Ohio State University researcher Aaron Boone, thinks the bird used to breed in Ohio centuries ago.
"I'm convinced that they were in Ohio, pre-settlement, but that their habitat was wiped out," McCormac said. "This thing got knocked out of Ohio. This rebound effect took a long time."
